First Reading: 1 Chronicles Chapter 29 and Hosea Chapter 11 Chronicles 29
29:1 Then King David said to the whole assembly: "My son Solomon, the
one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great, because
this palatial structure is not for man but for the LORD God. 2 With all my resources
I have provided for the temple of my God-gold for the gold work, silver for
the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood,
as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise, stones of various colors, and all
kinds of fine stone and marble-all of these in large quantities. 3 Besides,
in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold
and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided
for this holy temple: 4 three thousand talents of gold (gold of Ophir) and seven
thousand talents of refined silver, for the overlaying of the walls of the buildings,
5 for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work to be done by
the craftsmen. Now, who is willing to consecrate himself today to the LORD?"
6 Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders
of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of the
king's work gave willingly. 7 They gave toward the work on the temple of God
five thousand talents and ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents
of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze and a hundred thousand talents
of iron. 8 Any who had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the temple
of the LORD in the custody of Jehiel the Gershonite. 9 The people rejoiced at
the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly
to the LORD. David the king also rejoiced greatly.
10 David praised the LORD in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,
"Praise be to you, O LORD, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to
everlasting. 11 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory
and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours.
Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. 12 Wealth and
honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength
and power to exalt and give strength to all. 13 Now, our God, we give you thanks,
and praise your glorious name.
14 "But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give
as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only
what comes from your hand. 15 We are aliens and strangers in your sight, as
were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.
16 O LORD our God, as for all this abundance that we have provided for building
you a temple for your Holy Name, it comes from your hand, and all of it belongs
to you. 17 I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity.
All these things have I given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have
seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you. 18 O
LORD, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep this desire in the
hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you. 19 And give
my son Solomon the wholehearted devotion to keep your commands, requirements
and decrees and to do everything to build the palatial structure for which I
have provided."
20 Then David said to the whole assembly, "Praise the LORD your God."
So they all praised the LORD, the God of their fathers; they bowed low and fell
prostrate before the LORD and the king.
21 The next day they made sacrifices to the LORD and presented burnt offerings
to him: a thousand bulls, a thousand rams and a thousand male lambs, together
with their drink offerings, and other sacrifices in abundance for all Israel.
22 They ate and drank with great joy in the presence of the LORD that day.
Then they acknowledged Solomon son of David as king a second time, anointing
him before the LORD to be ruler and Zadok to be priest. 23 So Solomon sat on
the throne of the LORD as king in place of his father David. He prospered and
all Israel obeyed him. 24 All the officers and mighty men, as well as all of
King David's sons, pledged their submission to King Solomon.
25 The LORD highly exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on
him royal splendor such as no king over Israel ever had before.
26 David son of Jesse was king over all Israel. 27 He ruled over Israel forty
years-seven in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. 28 He died at a good old
age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon succeeded him
as king.
29 As for the events of King David's reign, from beginning to end, they are
written in the records of Samuel the seer, the records of Nathan the prophet
and the records of Gad the seer, 30 together with the details of his reign and
power, and the circumstances that surrounded him and Israel and the kingdoms
of all the other lands.
Hosea 1
1:1 The word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns
of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the reign of
Jeroboam son of Jehoash king of Israel:
2 When the LORD began to speak through Hosea, the LORD said to him, "Go,
take to yourself an adulterous wife and children of unfaithfulness, because
the land is guilty of the vilest adultery in departing from the LORD."
3 So he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a
son.
4 Then the LORD said to Hosea, "Call him Jezreel, because I will soon punish
the house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the
kingdom of Israel. 5 In that day I will break Israel's bow in the Valley of
Jezreel."
6 Gomer conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. Then the LORD said to
Hosea, "Call her Lo-Ruhamah, for I will no longer show love to the house
of Israel, that I should at all forgive them. 7 Yet I will show love to the
house of Judah; and I will save them-not by bow, sword or battle, or by horses
and horsemen, but by the LORD their God."
8 After she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah, Gomer had another son. 9 Then the LORD said,
"Call him Lo-Ammi, for you are not my people, and I am not your God.
10 "Yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore, which cannot
be measured or counted. In the place where it was said to them, 'You are not
my people,' they will be called 'sons of the living God.' 11 The people of Judah
and the people of Israel will be reunited, and they will appoint one leader
and will come up out of the land, for great will be the day of Jezreel.
2 Timothy 2
2:1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And
the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to
reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. 3 Endure hardship with
us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets involved
in civilian affairs-he wants to please his commanding officer. 5 Similarly,
if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless
he competes according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer should be the first
to receive a share of the crops. 7 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord
will give you insight into all this.
8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is
my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like
a criminal. But God's word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything
for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in
Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.
11 Here is a trustworthy saying:
If we died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also
reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; 13 if we are faithless,
he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.
14 Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling
about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your
best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need
to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 16 Avoid godless
chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.
17 Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
18 who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has
already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, God's
solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: "The Lord knows
those who are his," and, "Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord
must turn away from wickedness."
20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also
of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. 21 If a
man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes,
made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.
22 Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and
peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23 Don't have
anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce
quarrels. 24 And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind
to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Those who oppose him he must gently
instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a
knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape
from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
BOOKS OF THE BIBLE
HOSEA
Part 1 of 2
The book of Hosea written around 755-710 B.C. describes the patient long-suffering of God towards the rebellious and unfaithful northern kingdom of Israel. However, it is made clear to the Israelites that punishment will engulf anyone who remains willfully rebellious. A key theme is Hosea's marriage to the unfaithful Gomer, who is a symbolic representation of Israel.
